Isaias Hellman lived through some of the most tumultuous times of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He witnessed the massive migration from Europe to the United States, the opening of the Western frontier, the transformation of Los Angeles from a small pueblo to modern American city, and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.
