Out of the Ashes
San Francisco rebuilt itself after the devastation and in 1915 it showed its gleaming self to the world in the Panama Pacific International Exposition. More than 18 million people came to walk through the verdant gardens, marvel at the electric lights, and gawk at all the new technological innovations. Hellman was one of the early donors to the Exposition and his son, Marco, served as one of the vice-presidents.
